The verdict

Nova has Patrick Mahomes, 83rd overall, QB, KC, Tier 7, 4.8 VORP, 303.7 projected PPR points, 19.3 PPR points per game. Current PPR ADP is 104.4, so Nova is ahead of the room on price. The modeled PPR range runs from 96 to 446 points.

Editorial preseason rankings are shown separately from directional model projections, VORP, and tiers.

Rankings updated September 7. The analysis below is under review after the ranking-model correction. Its older finish probabilities and draft recommendations are not current. Use the updatedrankings board for draft decisions.

Where He's Expected to Land

Nova projects roughly 275 points at 18.17 per game across 15.2 expected games, 3,701 passing yards, 23.5 passing touchdowns, 366.7 rushing yards, and 3 rushing scores. The likely-finish band is wide: QB7 to QB30. That's not the model hedging; that's what a rebuilt knee does to a distribution.

The per-game shape is the sales pitch. His DNA grade is S+, elite week-to-week consistency, with a 10% bust rate, 51% solid weeks, and 39% boom weeks. When he plays, he almost never zeroes you.

The Last Three Seasons

Year Team Games PPG Finish
2023 KC 16 17.5 QB11
2024 KC 16 17.7 QB11
2025 KC 14 20.4 QB11

Three straight QB11 finishes look like a flat line. The table hides the 2025 breakout: Mahomes was scoring 20.4 per game, with a career-friendly 422 rushing yards and 5 rushing touchdowns in 14 games, and sat QB6 through Week 15 before the injury, per SI's Gray Deyo (July 7). Nova's 2025 game log shows five games over 26 PPR points. The volume-scoring version of Mahomes had already returned; the season just ended three weeks early.

What Changed for Him This Offseason

Everything at once. He tore the ACL and LCL in his left knee in the Week 15 loss to the Chargers on December 14, 2025, and had surgery the next evening in Dallas with Dr. Dan Cooper, per NFL.com (December 15). A standard 9-to-12-month timeline made Week 1 (September 14 vs. Denver) a genuine question.

The rehab has outrun the calendar. Mahomes completed the full offseason program and mandatory minicamp, and NFL Network's Stacey Dales reported on June 12 that he's ahead of pace, with running and cutting already underway. Then Kansas City answered the long-term question: a $504.75 million extension through 2033, signed June 11, the first half-billion-dollar contract in league history. He turns 31 in September. The Chiefs are not planning around his decline; they're planning around his knee brace.

What Changed Around Him

Coaching: Matt Nagy left to run the Giants' offense (per ESPN, February 3), and Andy Reid brought back Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator (per ESPN, January 21). Bieniemy coordinated the 2018–2022 offenses, the stretch that includes the 50-touchdown 2018 season and the 2022 MVP year. Correlation isn't causation with Reid calling plays, but the scheme-continuity risk here is near zero.

Backfield: Isiah Pacheco signed with Detroit; Kenneth Walker III signed in from Seattle. A legitimate lead back changes the goal-line math and, relevant to a QB on a rebuilt knee, reduces how often Mahomes has to create with his legs.

Receivers: Hollywood Brown left for Philadelphia. The Chiefs added nobody of consequence, betting on internal growth: Rashee Rice (released from a Dallas County jail June 16 after a 30-day probation-violation sentence, plus a knee scope, per ESPN's Nate Taylor, June 20), Xavier Worthy (torn labrum repaired in January), and Tyquan Thornton. Travis Kelce re-signed. Insurance: Justin Fields arrived from the Jets for a 2027 sixth-rounder, and the Chiefs drafted LSU's Garrett Nussmeier in the seventh round, a hedge you buy only if Week 1 isn't certain.

What They're Saying

"I love what he did this offseason, the way he attacked the rehab. He's on course to ... get ready for camp," Andy Reid told reporters, via the Associated Press on June 11. Reid added that Mahomes has stayed in Kansas City rehabbing with team physical therapist Julie Frymyer instead of returning to Texas, a small detail that reads like urgency.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported on June 11 that Mahomes and the Chiefs are openly embracing the Week 1 target, with cutting mobility the focal point of the next two months. And Reid told reporters Worthy looked stronger after a standout offseason camp, per Nate Taylor's June 20 ESPN piece.

Does the model price this in? Mostly yes. Nova's 15.2 expected games assumes he's out there nearly the full season, the optimistic camp reports are already in the number. What Nova has not done is hand back the rushing production: 24.1 projected rush yards per game versus 30.1 last year, and 3 rushing TDs versus 5 in 14 games. The model believes the knee costs him the legs, not the season.

The Buzz

The analyst crowd is split down the middle. Yahoo's Justin Boone put Mahomes on his June 24 fade list at QB11/pick 90, "Mahomes is a tough sell inside the top 100 picks", citing the post-ACL rushing decline. SI's fantasy desk argued the opposite on July 7: QB6 per-game production before the injury makes him a value at an ESPN composite rank of QB14. When the loudest voices are publishing both "fade" and "value" columns about the same ADP, the market is uncertain, not decided, and uncertain markets are where a 39% boom rate at pick 77 comes from.

Swing Factors

  • Games played (±90 pts): Nova bakes in 15.2 games. The gap between the 95-point floor and 275-point median is almost entirely availability, a setback in camp moves this ranking more than any other input.
  • Post-ACL mobility (−25 pts): Nova already discounts his rushing ~20% per game. If the brace comes off and the scramble game returns to 2025 levels, that discount comes back to you as profit.
  • Rashee Rice's season (+20 pts): Back in the building since mid-June, final year of his rookie deal, motivated. A full Rice season is the difference between 23.5 and a run at 28+ passing TDs.
  • Playoff schedule (−15 pts): Nova flags weeks 15–17 as a tough stretch. You're drafting him partly for the fantasy playoffs; the schedule doesn't cooperate.

If Everything Goes Right / If Everything Goes Wrong

If everything goes right: he starts Week 1 against Denver, the knee holds, Bieniemy's offense picks up where the 20.4-PPG version of 2025 left off, and a healthy Rice-Worthy-Kelce trio pushes him toward the 479-point ceiling, a top-3 QB season at a pick-77 price. Nova gives the tier-1 outcome 23%, and a tier-2-or-better season 42%.

If everything goes wrong: the running-and-cutting phase stalls in August, Fields starts September, and a compromised Mahomes manages half a season around a knee that won't plant. That's the 95-point floor of Nova's distribution, the QB30 end of the likely-finish band. Note what the bad tail isn't: it isn't weekly failure (the bust rate when he plays is just 10%). It's games missed, which is exactly the risk the seventh-round price is paying you to carry.

Nova's Edge

The market's fear is concentrated in the wrong place. Boone's fade case, less rushing, is already inside Nova's projection; the model cut his rush yards and TDs and still lands him 11–13 slots above his ADP. What the market is underpricing is the shape of his scoring: a 10% bust rate and S+ DNA grade mean that in the 15 games Nova expects, he's the steadiest weekly QB profile you can get outside the first fifty picks. You're not paying for ceiling here, the 23% tier-1 shot is the free part. You're paying pick 77 for a 51%-solid/39%-boom weekly floor.

The Bottom Line

At ADP 104.4 (seventh round, QB10–12 range), Mahomes is a buy, take him anywhere from pick 66 on, and treat a slide past 80 as theft. Inside the top 55 you're paying for the name, not the distribution. In superflex he moves up two rounds on scarcity alone. Justin Fields is a KC-stack insurance dart, not a priority. The gradeable claim: Nova gives Mahomes a 42% shot at a tier-2-or-better season and 23% at tier-1, odds you should not be able to buy at pick 77. Clip it and grade us in January.

Nova overview

Patrick Mahomes is Nova's 83rd-ranked player overall (QB, KC), in Tier 7. Nova projects roughly 304 points this season, about 19.34 per game.

He is a value: the market drafts him around pick 104, well behind Nova's 83, so he tends to return more than his cost.
