The likely finish band runs QB6 to QB29, which sounds wide until you see the shape: 26% tier-1 probability, 45% tier-2-or-better, and a per-game split of 35% boom, 47% solid, 18% bust.

That's a QB whose median week is startable and whose ceiling weeks come often enough to win you Sundays, priced like a backup.

The Last Three Seasons

Fifty-one straight regular-season starts, never below 17.0 PPG, never below 4,500 passing yards. The table hides one thing: 2025 felt worse than it scored. Detroit went from 14-2 in 2024 to eliminated at 8-8 on Christmas Day, the coordinator got fired, and the head coach took over play-calling midstream, and Goff still posted 297 points with a career-low 8 picks. The environment collapsed; the output didn't.

What Changed for Him This Offseason

For Goff personally: nothing. Same team, same contract, no injury, and he turns 32 in October, the flat part of the QB age curve, not the cliff. For a pocket passer whose game was never built on legs (Nova logs 2.4 yards per carry and zero rushing touchdowns on 3 red-zone carries in 2025), there's no athleticism to lose. The stability is the point.

What Changed Around Him

Everything else moved.

Coaching. Detroit fired OC John Morton after one season, Dan Campbell had already stripped him of play-calling mid-2025 (CBS Sports, Dec. 2025), and hired Drew Petzing from Arizona in late January (Washington Post, Jan. 26, 2026). Per Pro Football Talk, citing ESPN's reporting, Petzing is expected to call the plays. That matters more than the name: Goff's 2025 turbulence coincided with a play-caller carousel, and 2026 restores a single, dedicated voice.

The line. Frank Ragnow's departure leaves center to trade acquisition Cade Mays, Penei Sewell is expected to flip to left tackle, and rookie Blake Miller is competing for the right tackle job (Tim Twentyman, detroitlions.com, May 6, 2026). For a QB with no scramble escape valve, three new spots up front is the real risk in this profile.

The weapons. Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams return. Sam LaPorta is back from back surgery and, per Twentyman's report, confident he'll be full go for camp. Isiah Pacheco replaces David Montgomery as the RB2 behind Jahmyr Gibbs, and Arizona's Greg Dortch, who already knows Petzing's system, joins the receiver room.

What They're Saying

Goff has been openly enthusiastic about the new coordinator. "He's got a great feel for what it's like to run an offense and to run a room," Goff told reporters at OTAs, per ESPN Lions reporter Eric Woodyard (June 3, 2026). NFL.com's offseason coverage reported Goff went further, describing Petzing as a home-run hire who will run what the offense does best.

Campbell, for his part, praised the fit in the same ESPN piece: "He's the same guy every day. It's unbelievable." And St. Brown, in the meeting rooms with Petzing since spring, told Woodyard he thinks the offense "is going to be great for us."

None of this is scheme detail, and Nova doesn't grade vibes. But the specific signal, a settled play-caller, installed since January, with the QB publicly bought in, is exactly the variable that broke in 2025, and the model's 281-point median already assumes a functional Detroit passing game rather than a broken one.

The Buzz

The fantasy industry is on this one. RotoWire lists Goff among its late-round QB targets for 2026, Fantasy Life calls him "a sleeper QB option, again," and Side Lion Report jokes he's the poster boy for the late-round-QB strategy. So the crowd isn't wrong, it's just not moving. His ADP still sits at 90.1 while the industry writes value columns about him.

That's the gap: everyone agrees he's underpriced, and nobody's actually paying up. You don't need to reach; you need to be the one drafter in the room who clicks the button a round before the rest planned to.

Swing Factors

• Play-caller stability (+1 tier of confidence): one dedicated voice replaces the 2025 Morton-to-Campbell shuffle. The 45% P(tier-2+) leans on this holding.
• O-line turnover (the fat left tail): new center, Sewell switching sides, possibly a rookie at right tackle. A pocket QB with 50 projected rush yards has no plan B if protection slips.
• LaPorta's back (±15 pts): a full-go LaPorta stabilizes the middle of the field; a lingering recovery thins Goff's highest-percentage target tree.
• TD regression band (±20 pts): Nova projects 31.3 passing TDs against last year's 34, the model already prices modest give-back, so a repeat of 2024's 37 is upside, not assumption.
• Petzing install speed (September variance): first-year systems start slow often enough that Nova's 18% bust rate isn't evenly distributed, treat early weeks as the risk window.

If Everything Goes Right / If Everything Goes Wrong

If everything goes right: the new line jells, LaPorta is full speed, and Petzing's offense does for Goff what a settled play-caller did in 2024, 37-TD territory, weekly boom rate pushing 40%, and a run at the 504-point ceiling of Nova's distribution. The model gives the tier-1 season 26%, roughly one in four, at an eighth-round price.

If everything goes wrong: Mays and a rookie right tackle leak pressure, the install stalls through September, and a QB with zero rushing value has nothing to cushion the passing dips, that's the road toward the distribution's 100-point floor, which is an injury-shortened season, not a full bad one. The weekly bust rate is 18%, and full-season disaster requires the durability streak, 51 straight starts, to finally break.

Nova's Edge

The industry's take on Goff is directionally right and quantitatively lazy: "late-round value" with no number attached. Nova attaches the numbers. Rank 55 versus ADP 103.1 is one of the largest positive gaps on the QB board, and it comes with a B DNA grade, this is not a volatile dart, it's a stable distribution the market refuses to pay for because it's boring. Boring is 47% solid weeks plus 35% booms and only 18% duds.

Draft Goff as your QB1 in rounds 7-8 (his ADP 103.1 says he'll be there), and treat anything after pick 95 as theft. In superflex, he jumps two rounds, 17 games a year of 17-plus PPG is exactly what that format pays for. Skip the early-QB tax, take the +37 edge, and spend your premium picks on the positions where replacement level actually hurts. Gradeable claim for January: Goff finishes top-9 at quarterback for the second straight season, Nova puts tier-2-or-better at 45%, and at his price you're risking a ninth-round pick to find out.
