Darren Waller

Nova has Darren Waller 139th overall and buried in Tier 7 (T7) at tight end, DNA grade V for Variable, -35.2 VORP, and no ADP at all, because the market isn't pricing him: he doesn't have a team. That last part is the headline. Nova projects a 97-point season (8.36 PPG) and a 4% shot at a tier-1 year, but those numbers assume he's playing somewhere. As of July 11, he isn't. This is a watchlist stash, not a draft-day plan, until a phone rings.

Where he's expected to land. Across formats Nova has Waller in the TE21–TE44 range with a 37–162 point outcome band (PPR), sliding to Tier 7 and a slightly friendlier VORP (-24) in Standard. None of the four format cuts, PPR, Half, Standard, Superflex, move him out of streamer/stash territory. Playoff scheduling (weeks 15-17) also grades tough at 5.3, so even a late-summer signing wouldn't hand him a soft fantasy-playoff slate.

The last three seasons.

The trend is real but small: PPG ticked up from 9.4 to 9.8 across a one-year retirement gap, and the touchdown rate exploded (1 in 12 games with the Giants vs. 6 in 9 with Miami). But durability is the whole story, he missed 5 games in 2023, sat out all of 2024, and missed 8 more in 2025. That's two incomplete seasons and a lost year across his last three.

What changed for him this offseason. Nothing has changed, and that's the problem. Waller is an unrestricted free agent heading into July with no contract. PFSN's Jack Aaron laid out why on June 20: at 33, with "overall inconsistent play since 2021" and a TE1 market that's already locked in around the league, Aaron writes that "he's likely considered a win-now player" whose fit is limited to contenders with an open TE2 role, and even then, teams may balk because he "has never" been a blocker, limiting him to receiving-down snaps only. He missed 8 games with multiple injuries in 2025. Dolphins Wire flagged him as a top unsigned TE on June 21, reporting that Miami's new front office hasn't seemed interested in bringing Waller back for 2026, having already re-signed Greg Dulcich instead.

What changed around him. Everything changed around him except his own situation. Miami fired head coach Mike McDaniel on January 8 after a 7-10 season, the staff that traded for him and ran him as a move tight end in 2025 is gone. Owner Stephen Ross called it a need for "comprehensive change" in the team's January 8 statement announcing the move. The Dolphins' current tight end room (Julian Hill, the re-signed Dulcich) doesn't include Waller, and Yahoo Sports' Dolphins training-camp primer on June 30 summed up Miami's stance as unresolved: Waller may not want to return, but the team could still circle back to him between now and camp if nothing better emerges. That's the most concrete team-fit chatter out there, and it's lukewarm at best.

The buzz. Fantasy Twitter and Reddit remember the flash, not the free-agency limbo, a December Reddit thread was still debating his per-game upside months after the fact, and stackedfantasy.com (May 27) filed him as the template "McDaniel flex-only tight end" who produced spike weeks on just a 50-60% route share (117 yards, 4 TDs across Weeks 4-6 alone, per PFSN). The crowd is trading on his ceiling from a scheme and staff that no longer exist. Nova isn't buying it, Tier 7, no ADP, 5% boom rate. When the model and the vibes disagree this hard, the model is the one pricing in the fact that he currently has no job.

Swing factors.

• Signs with a contender in TE-need mode (+80-100 pts): a Bills/Chiefs/Rams-style offense with a vacated move-TE role would push him toward his 162-point ceiling.
• Remains unsigned into August (-60 pts): every week without a team caps his route-running reps before Week 1 and pushes his outcome toward the 37-point floor.
• Injury recurrence (-30 pts): he's missed real time in each of his last two active seasons, 5 games in 2023, 8 in 2025.
• Age-33 snap share (±25 pts): even in a good landing spot, a part-time role caps the weekly ceiling.

If everything goes right: he signs with a pass-heavy team by early August, wins a receiving-down role in Week 1, and the touchdown efficiency from his 2025 spike weeks carries into a full slate, Nova's 90th-percentile outcome, roughly 162 points, would make him a streaming TE1 several weeks a year. That tier-1 season sits at 4% likelihood. If everything goes wrong: camp opens with no team on the phone, he signs late (if at all) into a clean-up role, and the 54% weekly bust rate (sub-10 PPR points) defines his year at the 37-point floor, a name on waivers, not a roster spot.

Nova's edge. There's no ADP gap to exploit here, the "divergence" story is that the industry hasn't priced him at all, and Nova still has, buried in Tier 7, but on the board. A 4% DNA-V player with no team is, by definition, an avoid in redraft leagues right now; the edge is knowing exactly which signing would flip that call, and watching the transaction wire rather than a rankings page.

The bottom line. Undraftable in single-QB PPR at current information. In deep or dynasty formats, he's a free FAAB stash (1-2%) worth burning only after he lands somewhere with a real receiving role, Nova's own range (TE21-44, 37-162 total points) tells you the swing is too wide to roster on spec. Graded claim: if Darren Waller is still unsigned by the start of Week 1, he finishes outside the top-40 tight ends in total points.
