The verdict

Nova has Mike Evans 91st overall, Tier 6, 2 VORP, B-grade DNA, and the market is taking him around pick 51. That's a 40-spot gap, one of the largest fades on Nova's board. The room sees a Hall of Famer walking into a Kyle Shanahan offense with a wide- open target tree. Nova sees a 33-year-old coming off 84.8 PPR points, projected for 12.8 games, with a 33% weekly bust rate. You're paying a fourth-round price for an eighth- round distribution.

Where He's Expected to Land

Nova's median season: about 164 points at 12.84 PPG, built on a 51-707-7 receiving line. Note the games number underneath, the sim projects 12.8 games played, so the injury discount is already inside the projection, not stacked on top of it.

The weekly shape is what Tier 6 looks like: 22% boom weeks (20+ PPR), 45% solid, 33% bust (under 10). The B DNA grade says steady when he's on the field; the bust rate says "on the field" is the operative clause. Nova's likely finish range spans WR24 to WR76, a band wide enough to contain both the market's dream and its nightmare.

The Last Three Seasons

Year Team Games PPR pts PPG
2023 TB 17 282.5 16.6
2024 TB 14 240.4 17.2
2025 TB 8 84.8 10.6

Through 2024 this table is remarkable: the PPG actually went up at age 31. Then 2025 happened, a September hamstring injury, followed by a broken collarbone (plus a concussion) on Monday Night Football in Week 7 that cost him most of the rest of the year. Eight games, 30-368-3, and the end of his 11 straight 1,000-yard seasons, the streak that had tied Jerry Rice.

The table hides the uglier part. Per Fantasy Life's Ian Hartitz, Evans's 2025 efficiency cratered even when he played: 71st of 79 qualifiers in yards per target, and ESPN's Open Rating had him tied for 79th in separation after being tied for first in 2024. Nova's usage panel agrees, a 24% target share and 35% air-yards share (huge), but a 48% catch rate and 5.9 yards per target (grim).

What Changed for Him This Offseason

Evans left Tampa Bay after 12 seasons and signed a three-year deal with San Francisco on March 12, $42.4 million base, up to $60.4 million with incentives, per ESPN. He turns 33 in August.

By his own account he's healthy and recharged. "I'm feeling really fresh, feeling rejuvenated," he said after June OTAs, via 49ers.com, calling the 2025 hamstring setback a blessing in disguise and crediting Brock Purdy as "a big reason why I came here."

What Changed Around Him

The 49ers' receiver room emptied out around him, which is exactly why the market is excited:

  • Brandon Aiyuk is functionally gone. He sits on the reserve/left squad list, missed all of 2025, and a league executive told Jason La Canfora (SportsBoom, July 1) the team has "long given up" on trading him; a release is expected.
  • Jauan Jennings left for Minnesota on a one-year, $8 million deal in May.
  • The replacements are modest: free-agent signee Christian Kirk, second-year Ricky Pearsall, and rookie De'Zhuan Stribling round out the depth chart.

Evans is the unchallenged X receiver from day one. The counterweights: Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle still headline the target tree, and Shanahan's offense has historically manufactured YAC underneath rather than feeding contested downfield balls, the exact throws Evans has made a career on. ESPN's signing coverage noted his 27 career touchdowns on tight-window throws over the past decade, which is the part of his game Shanahan is buying: red-zone gravity, not route wins.

What They're Saying

  • "He was cooking everybody, don't care who it is. You can't just cover him one-on-one, really," George Kittle said of Evans's OTA work on Up & Adams, June 10. Kittle also described Evans stacking touchdowns in a single red-zone period.
  • 49ers.com's OTA wrap-up (June) emphasized instant Purdy chemistry and Evans's focus on winning one-on-one opportunities for his quarterback.
  • On the skeptic side, ESPN's Mike Clay named Evans a bust candidate in early July: over the past decade only Larry Fitzgerald and Julian Edelman posted top-25 fantasy seasons at 33-plus, and both lived in the slot, Evans lives downfield and in the red zone.

Reconcile it with the model: Nova is not doubting the role. A 51-catch, 7-TD, 13-red-zone-opportunity projection over 12.8 games is a featured player. The discount is availability and efficiency, the two things June practice clips can't measure.

The Buzz

Niners social media is fully bought in, OTA highlight clips and the Kittle quotes have fan sites in midsummer swoon. Fantasy analysts are split: Fantasy Life ranks him WR22 while flagging the "risk baked into his borderline WR2 price tag," and FantasyPros consensus sits at WR27 with an ADP of 44. Every external number, crowd, industry, ADP, is three to four rounds ahead of Nova's 91. The crowd isn't wrong that the situation improved; it's paying for the situation and ignoring the odometer.

Swing Factors

  • Games played (±35 pts): Nova bakes in 12.8 games. Seventeen healthy games at the same 12.8 PPG is roughly 218 points, solid WR2, without any efficiency rebound at all.
  • Age-33 efficiency (−30 pts): if 5.9 yards per target and a 48% catch rate are the new baseline rather than an injury artifact, even the 164-point median is generous.
  • Red-zone conversion (±20 pts): 7 of Nova's projected TDs ride on 13 red-zone opportunities. Touchdown variance is roughly a quarter of his value.
  • Aiyuk resolution (+10 pts): an official release ends any midseason target reshuffle and locks the X job all year.

If Everything Goes Right / If Everything Goes Wrong

If everything goes right: the hamstring and collarbone were 2025's story, not a trend. Evans plays 17 games as Purdy's clear No. 1, the red-zone role Kittle raved about translates to double-digit touchdowns, and he lands near the 90th percentile of the sim, about 287 points, comfortably back in WR1 territory. Nova prices a tier-2-or-better season at 26%, tier-1 at 12%.

If everything goes wrong: a 33-year-old body that broke twice last year breaks again, Shanahan's underneath machine leaves the deep X as decoration, and the season collapses toward the 63-point floor of the distribution. You don't need the full disaster for this pick to sting, a 33% weekly bust rate means one week in three returns under 10 PPR even in the median world.

Nova's Edge

The three-way read is unusually clean. The industry (FantasyPros WR27, ADP 44) and the draft market (ADP 50.7) are aligned with each other and 40 spots above Nova's 91. Vegas splits the difference in a telling way: DraftKings hangs Evans's receiving-yards line at 849.5 with even juice, and Nova projects 706.7, a 16.8% under, Nova's biggest disagreement with the market on his page. On touchdowns, DK says 6.5 and Nova leans slightly over at 7.

Put those together and Nova is describing a specific player: yardage-light, touchdown-dependent, availability-capped. If his value is going to come in six-point chunks, the weekly floor is exactly as fragile as that 33% bust rate says.

The Bottom Line

Don't click at pick 51, that price asks Evans to beat an age curve that only slot receivers have beaten in the last decade. Nova makes him a legitimate value from pick 90 on, where the 26% tier-2 shot and the 287-point ceiling become a bet worth making. His TD-heavy, spike-week shape plays better in best-ball and standard scoring than in PPR, where the 48% catch rate bites hardest. If he's gone by round 6 in your room, and at ADP 50.7 he will be, let someone else pay for the name.

The gradeable claim: Nova says under 800 receiving yards, below the DraftKings line by 140+, and a 74% chance he falls short of a tier-2 season. Check back in January.
