De'Von Achane
Nova has De'Von Achane, 18th overall, RB, MIA, Tier 4, 103.5 VORP, 266.3 projected PPR points, 18 PPR points per game. Current PPR ADP is 9.7, so Nova is below the room on price. The modeled PPR range runs from 70 to 509 points.
Editorial preseason rankings are shown separately from directional model projections, VORP, and tiers.
Rankings updated September 7. The analysis below is under review after the ranking-model correction. Its older finish probabilities and draft recommendations are not current. Use the updatedrankings board for draft decisions.
Where He's Expected to Land
Nova's median sim gives Achane 283 PPR points at 18 per game across 15.4 expected games, note the model is already pricing in some missed time. That's a projected line of 1,084.6 rushing yards, 7.3 rushing scores, plus 60.8 catches for 449.8 yards and 4.3 receiving touchdowns.
The distribution behind that median: 45% boom weeks (20+ PPR), 38% solid, 17% bust. His DNA grade is H, high variance, and the likely finish range runs RB6 to RB32. That range is the profile in one number pair.
The Last Three Seasons
| Year | Team | Games | PPR Pts | PPG |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | MIA | 11 | 190.7 | 17.3 |
| 2024 | MIA | 17 | 299.9 | 17.6 |
| 2025 | MIA | 16 | 322.8 | 20.2 |
Three seasons, three PPG levels, all elite (stats per FantasyData). In 2025 he finished RB5 in points per game, per FantasyPros' Derek Brown, on 305 touches and 1,838 scrimmage yards, his first 1,000-yard rushing season (1,350) and first Pro Bowl. What the table hides: he closed 2025 hurt, missing the season finale with a left shoulder injury suffered in Week 17 against Tampa Bay. It also hides the highs, 40.5 PPR against Buffalo in Week 10, 31.0 against the Chargers in Week 6.
What Changed for Him This Offseason
Two things: he got paid, and he got cut open. Achane stayed away from voluntary workouts in April, and on May 13 Miami answered with a four-year, $64 million extension, $32 million assured, per NFL Network. New GM Jon-Eric Sullivan made clear the team never shopped him, a notable distinction in an offseason when Miami shopped nearly everyone else.
The shoulder is the open item. "He had something in his shoulder he had to get cleaned up. He did that and he is rehabbing right now," head coach Jeff Hafley said May 27, as reported by UPI. Achane did individual drills but no team work through OTAs and minicamp. Nova's 15.4 expected games already carry a haircut for exactly this kind of spring.
What Changed Around Him
Everything. Miami ran a full teardown:
- Coaching: Mike McDaniel was fired January 8 after a 7-10 season; Jeff Hafley, Green Bay's defensive coordinator, took over January 19. The offense belongs to coordinator Bobby Slowik, Houston's OC in 2023-24, six years in the Shanahan system in San Francisco, and Miami's senior pass-game coordinator last year, so he knows Achane's film cold.
- Quarterback: Tua Tagovailoa was released in the cap purge. Malik Willis is the starter, and CBS Sports' Dave Richard notes Willis threw to running backs on just 10.2% of his Green Bay attempts while keeping 20.8% of carries himself. Achane got 43% of his 2025 PPR production through the air. That's the collision course.
- Receivers: Tyreek Hill released, Jaylen Waddle traded to Denver. The room is now Jalen Tolbert, Tutu Atwell, Malik Washington and rookies, which makes Achane the entire offense, for better (volume) and worse (loaded boxes).
- Backfield: Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon II return behind him, plus new RB coach Ladell Betts.
What They're Saying
Slowik, asked June 4 about backs in the passing game: "We're going to use De'Von, we're going to use Ollie, we're going to use J. Wright to get out and they're the primary read" (team press-conference transcript). That's a usage signal, not praise, the backs are built into the progression, not just the checkdown.
The industry is less sure. Richard (CBS, this offseason) points out Slowik's Houston backs drew a 16% target share, below the league's 18% norm. Brown (FantasyPros, July 6) splits the difference: he calls Achane "an insanely talented RB1 that could lead the NFL in rushing yards this season" but argues the Willis effect strips his top-3-5 upside.
Nova has already priced most of this. The model projects 60.8 catches against last year's 67 and holds a 19% target share, it's betting Slowik's design keeps the receiving floor, not that McDaniel's checkdown machine survives intact.
The Buzz
The crowd has turned hard. Achane headlines bust lists at CBS (Jamey Eisenberg's Busts 1.0, May 7), SI, and NBC Sports, where Patrick Daugherty's July 10 Dolphins preview literally asks whether he can "avoid fantasy disaster." Yet ADP sits at 9.3, drafters are scared and still can't let him fall out of round one. When the loudest take is "fade" and the market barely moves, the discount you're waiting for never arrives. Nova at 7 says stop waiting.
Swing Factors
- Willis's RB target rate (±50 pts): the gap between Willis's 10.2% Green Bay rate and Slowik's 16% Houston share is roughly the difference between Achane's ceiling and his median.
- Shoulder ramp-up (±35 pts): full team drills by August keeps 15.4 expected games honest; a PUP stint drags him toward the floor tail.
- Scoring environment (−30 pts): Nova credits him 43 red-zone opportunities; a rebuilding offense that stalls at the 35 turns those into field-goal drives.
- Committee creep (−25 pts): Slowik named Gordon and Wright unprompted. Achane's 61% carry share is the number to defend.
- September schedule (+15 pts): early SOS of 18.6 is soft; a fast start ends the bust chatter by Week 4.
If Everything Goes Right / If Everything Goes Wrong
If everything goes right: the shoulder is a non-story by camp, Willis's scrambles pull linebackers out of gaps, and Achane, first in explosive-run rate among qualified backs last year, per FantasyPros, feasts on light boxes as the offense's only weapon. The sim's 90th percentile sees ~586 points, an overall-RB1 season. Nova gives a tier-1 finish 45%, and 65% odds he lands tier-2 or better.
If everything goes wrong: the shoulder lingers into September, Willis never learns the checkdown, and a bad team's carries get split three ways by November. The distribution bottoms out near 79 points. The weekly bust rate is 17%, nearly one down week in five for a first-round pick, and it's the number behind that H-grade DNA.
Nova's Edge
Every other outlet is publishing the same take: great player, terrible situation, fade at cost. Nova's distribution says the situation is why he's still on the board at 9, and that even after simulating the Willis problem, the shoulder, and the committee talk, the median still clears 18 PPR per game. The +2 divergence is small; the disagreement with the narrative is enormous. The room's ranking implies his 2025 receiving role was a McDaniel artifact. The model's 19% target share says the role follows the talent.
One honest caveat, date-stamped July 10: Nova's 15.4 expected games reflect the shoulder as reported in June. If he's not in full team drills by early August, the sim will shave that number, re-check the page before your draft.
The Bottom Line
Take Achane anywhere from pick 7 to the turn in PPR, that's paying the market price for a player the model has two spots cheaper than his risk suggests. He's a reach in the top 5, and in standard scoring knock him down a tier, since the receiving cushion is the part under threat. Roster Ollie Gordon II as the handcuff; Slowik has already told you the order behind Achane.
The gradeable claim: Achane finishes top-7 at running back in PPR points per game despite the Willis downgrade, Nova prices tier-2-or-better at 65%, and we'll grade it in January.
