Most Accurate Fantasy Football Projections: How to Actually Judge Them
Anyone can claim accuracy. Here is how to judge fantasy projections for real: locked picks, graded ranges, coverage targets, and public calibration.
Every projection site says it is accurate. Almost none of them prove it. This post gives you a five-part checklist for judging fantasy football projection accuracy, so you can separate a real track record from a marketing line before you trust anyone's numbers with your draft. It is a close cousin to what the numbers can and cannot do, which draws the same line around analytics in general.
Why "most accurate fantasy football projections" is usually an empty claim
Search for the most accurate fantasy football projections and you will find a wall of sites making the same claim. Ask a harder question: accurate compared to what, measured how, and graded by whom?
Most accuracy claims fail one of three ways.
- They are back-tested. The model was tuned on past seasons, then scored on those same seasons. That is a memory test, not a prediction test.
- They are cherry-picked. You see the five calls that hit. You never see the fifty that missed.
- They are never graded at all. The projections quietly disappear each Tuesday and fresh ones replace them. No ledger, no receipts.
If a projection can be edited after the games are played, its accuracy record is worthless. That leads to the first rule.
Rule 1: projections must be locked before kickoff
A projection only counts if it was frozen before the outcome was knowable. Locked before kickoff, timestamped, and never revised. Anything else invites quiet edits, and quiet edits make every accuracy stat downstream of them meaningless.
When you evaluate a projection source, ask one question first. Can I see exactly what they published before the games, including the calls that went wrong? If the answer is no, stop there.
Rule 2: grade the whole range, not just the point
A single number like "16.4 points" is almost guaranteed to be wrong. The honest question is not whether the point guess landed. It is whether the predicted range of outcomes matched reality. Accuracy on the raw number matters less than most sites imply, because what wins drafts is value over replacement, the idea explained in our VORP primer.
That is why serious forecasting uses CRPS, the continuous ranked probability score. CRPS grades an entire predicted distribution against what actually happened. A projection that said "probably 12 to 21 points, most likely around 16" gets credit when the player scores 19. A projection that was confidently narrow and wrong gets punished. Lower CRPS is better, and it rewards being honest about uncertainty instead of pretending it away.

Rule 3: check coverage against a stated target
If a model publishes a floor and a ceiling for every player, reality should land inside that band a predictable share of the time. NovaPredict's bands run from a 10th percentile floor to a 90th percentile ceiling, so the target is 80 percent coverage.
Coverage is a brutal honesty check.
- Coverage far above the target means the bands are too wide. The model is hedging, and wide bands are easy to hit and useless for decisions.
- Coverage far below the target means the bands are too narrow. The model is overconfident, which is the more dangerous failure.
- Coverage near the target means the model actually knows how much it does not know.
Any site can draw a floor and a ceiling on a player card. The question is whether anyone ever checks how often reality stayed inside the lines.
Rule 4: score boom and bust calls with Brier
Fantasy decisions are often binary. Will this player boom? Is this a bust risk? Probability claims like "35 percent boom odds" can be graded with the Brier score, which measures the gap between a stated probability and the outcome. Alongside it, a skill score answers the question that matters: did these probabilities beat naive guessing? A model that cannot beat a coin flip on its own boom calls should not be shaping your start and sit decisions.
Rule 5: demand calibration
Calibration is the simplest test of all. When a model says something is 70 percent likely, it should happen about 70 percent of the time across many calls. A calibration ledger lays every stated probability against its outcome, in public. Well-calibrated models earn trust one bucket at a time. Uncalibrated models sound confident and lose you weeks.
